Van Dijke second after close sprint in third stage Cro Race
Mick van Dijke has finished in second place in the third stage of the Cro Race. The Dutchman was outsprinted on the line by Belgian Milan Menten in the sprint of a reduced peloton. Van Dijke is now in third place in the general classification. For Team Jumbo-Visma it was the third top-two result in as many stages.
In the hilly stage to Makarska, an early breakaway was reeled in just before the final climb. On that climb, Sam Oomen attacked. After everything came back together in the final kilometres, Van Dijke was put in position by Chris Harper, Oomen and Tobias Foss. It looked like Van Dijke was on his way to the stage win but got passed on the line by Menten.
“The goal was that I would sprint today if I survived the climb”, Van Dijke said. “The stage went according to plan for us. Lennard was in the lead of the peloton all day to keep the breakaway under control. We maintained that control until the foot of the final climb. In the end, I was confident that I would make it through the climb in the first group. Tobias, Sam and Chris have done a good job to get me in position for the sprint. Unfortunately, I just couldn't finish it off, but this leaves me wanting more. And it certainly gives me confidence in what is yet to come.”
