Teunissen sprints to second place in Hungary after chaotic final
Mike Teunissen has just fallen just short of victory in the third stage of the Tour of Hungary. After a crash in the peloton Teunissen sprinted in a depleted sprinting group.
The breakaway of the day was caught at about ten kilometres from the finish. The riders of Team Jumbo-Visma were all well-positioned at the front of the peloton in the final. However, the final corner threw a spanner in the works for sprinter Olav Kooij, who saw his chances of winning the stage go up in smoke due to a crash.
Teunissen and Mick van Dijke were just in front of the crash and were able to jump with the depleted group. Teunissen started his sprint from far away. The Team Jumbo-Visma rider looked like he was going to make it, but was narrowly beaten on the line by Phil Bauhaus. A photo finish had to decide the outcome.
"For a moment I thought I had won. I realised it was very close."
Teunissen admitted after the race that he thought he had won. “For a moment I thought I had won. I realised it was very close. We were in a good position with the team. Rick Pluimers unfortunately was the first to crash. Then I saw in the corner of my eye how Olav crashed. I barely managed to stay on the bike. Then I had to quickly find a connection with the front group. It was almost impossible to pass those guys. Fortunately, I just managed to do so.”
"It’s nice that I could compete for the victory in my first race in a long time."
In the end, Teunissen came up just short of victory. Nevertheless, the Dutchman is happy that he was able to achieve such a performance in his first race after his injury. “I felt I didn’t have much left. I decided to go for it anyway and make the best of it. Unfortunately, I couldn't keep up my pace at the end. You know they will come from behind. It’s a shame that Bauhaus just passed me in the final metres. For me, this is a nice achievement. It’s nice that I could compete for the victory in my first race in a long time. For now, I hope everyone on the team will be okay. Then the focus can be on the two remaining stages.”
Pluimers and Kooij crashed about a kilometre before the finish. Except for some abrasions, both riders escaped without any serious injuries.
