Persistent Teunissen finishes eighth in Eschborn-Frankfurt
Mike Teunissen has finished eighth in Eschborn-Frankfurt. In the hilly race, the 29-year-old Dutchman rode in a leading group for a while, before sprinting in the bunch sprint. Jasper Philipsen won the race
Five riders got a free ride from the peloton and gained a maximum lead of six minutes. On the penultimate passage of the Mammolshain, the tempo increased and several attacks followed. Dylan Groenewegen could not keep up with that pace. Subsequently, Mike Teunissen and Sam Oomen got in a new breakaway of sixteen men, but that group also could not stay ahead of the peloton. The classic ended in a traditional bunch sprint, in which the persistent Teunissen sprinted to eighth place.
"I think we were on the right track"
Sports director Frans Maassen was pleased with the team performance. “I think we were on the right track. Basically, we were hoping for a sprint with Dylan in case he survived the hill part. Otherwise it would become a sprint with Mike. In the hill zone, there was a lot of racing and then a strong front group of sixteen rode away. Mike and Sam were part of it. Dylan could not return after the middle part. The collaboration was not great in that leading group, so Mike also worked a little less to not completely sacrifice his chances. In the end, everything came back together and unfortunately Mike didn’t come out quite right in the sprint. Otherwise a better result would have been possible.”
