Groenewegen wins Veenendaal-Veenendaal for third time

Dylan Groenewegen has won the Dutch semi-classic Veenendaal-Veenendaal for the third time in his career. This makes the 25-year-old sprinter of Team LottoNL-Jumbo the record winner.

Groenewegen won the bunch sprint in Veenendaal after an impressive lead-out by Gijs Van Hoecke and Timo Roosen. Team LottoNL-Jumbo controlled the race in a superior way and brought Groenewegen in an ideal position to the sprint.

Groenewegen’s victory is his twelfth of the season. It’s also the twenty-ninth for Team LottoNL-Jumbo.

“This is a victory for and from the entire team”, Groenewegen said. “The team controlled the race from the start. My teammates were really strong. Although I didn’t have a good feeling in the beginning. Winning three times here is wonderful. I won my first race as a professional here three years ago. Therefore, this race is special for me. It’s a Dutch race, we are a Dutch team and we wanted to win here. It worked out. Super.”

Yet it wasn’t an easy race. “We were the only WorldTour team at the start. So you know that everyone will look at you and that it will be a difficult day. It was very difficult to control, with one rider fewer. There was a lot of twisting and turning, but the boys did a good job. I’m very happy that after my heavy crash in the Tour and a difficult BinckBankTour, I’m slowly becoming my old self again. This gives confidence.”
