Vos just misses out on stage victory in Volta a Catalunya
Marianne Vos finished second in the opening stage of the Volta a Catalunya. The 37-year-old rider from Team Visma | Lease a Bike came a few millimeters short in the bunch sprint to keep Ally Wollaston from victory.
The first edition of the Spanish stage race immediately presented the peloton with a number of altimeters. On the second and last categorized climb some riders tried to break away from the peloton, but partly due to the efforts of Team Visma | Lease a Bike everything stayed together.
In the closing kilometres Vos was launched well by her teammates, but the multiple world champion mentioned she could not do the sprint she had hoped for. "I was thrown off balance for a moment and then I just came up short to go for the win. That was a pity," Vos said.
"Tomorrow is a climbing day and that's where the classification will be decided."
In the run-up to the sprint, a roundabout led to some chaos in the peloton. "After that, we were on the wrong side of the road, so we had to change our plan and do another preparation. Fortunately, we solved that well and my teammates brought me to the final kilometre. Unfortunately, I couldn't finish it off."
Despite missing out on the win, Vos is looking forward to the coming days with confidence. "Tomorrow is a climbing day and that's where the classification will be decided. For me personally, it will be a difficult stage, but with Riejanne Markus we have someone who has aspirations for the overall victory. In any case, we are going to have another shot at the stage victory."
