Vos fights her way to fourth place in brutal edition of Tour of Flanders
Marianne Vos just missed out on a podium place in the Tour of Flanders. The 36-year-old rider of Team Visma | Lease a Bike competed for the victory, but had to let three riders go on the Paterberg. Vos won the sprint for fourth place.
As expected, the race broke open at Koppenberg. Vos set the pace and ensured that only eight riders remained at the front. On the Paterberg, the final obstacle of this rain-soaked edition, the 2013 winner had a tough moment. Elisa Longo Borghini and Kasia Niewiadoma accelerated and headed to the finish line together with Shirin van Anrooij.
Behind the winning Longo Borghini, Vos sprinted to fourth place. "It was a very tough race. On the Koppenberg we got ahead with a nice group, but on the Paterberg I had to drop. Van Anrooij placed a good attack and Longo Borghini and Niewiadoma were also very strong. Of course you hope to get back in the race after that, but the gap didn't really get smaller. The best three rode in front."
"Marianne got the maximum out of it with a fourth place"
Race coach Jan Boven was pleased with the team's performance. "We assumed Marianne and Fem would color the final and they did. Marianne got into a very good group after the Koppenberg and Fem was right behind. On the Paterberg, Marianne unfortunately just couldn't keep up with the strongest. All in all, she got the maximum out of it with a fourth place. Of course we were going for the win, but when three are stronger, you have to accept that."
