Vingegaard still leading Tour de Pologne after queen stage

Jonas Vingegaard and Wilco Kelderman both finished in the top five in the queen stage of the Tour de Pologne. In an uphill sprint with an elite group, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike riders finished in the same time as stage winner Thibau Nys. Vingegaard goes into Sunday's final stage as leader of the general classification.

On the penultimate day of the Tour of Poland, the riders were presented with the queen stage between Wadowice and Bukovina Resort. After the opening hours on rolling roads, the riders climbed three categorised hills. Classification leader Vingegaard started the stage with a 19-second advantage over Diego Ulissi.

After the start, three riders chose to attack. In the peloton, Team Visma | Lease a Bike did its part in the chase. Some 50 kilometres from the line, Mick van Dijke set up the counterattack together with Tim Wellens, Tobias Foss and Archie Ryan. Moments later, the four managed to join the leading group.

At the foot of the steep final climb, Archie Ryan, now riding for EF Education - Eastport and in the past breaking through in the Development Team of Team Visma | Lease a bike, tried to go solo. Meanwhile, Vingegaard reacted alertly to the accelerations in the group of favourites. Ryan's attempt was nullified a few kilometres from the line. A small group eventually sprinted for the win. On the uphill finishing metres, Nys again proved the strongest. Vingegaard and Kelderman finished fourth and fifth in the same time. In the general classification, Vingegaard holds a thirteen-second lead over Ulissi. Kelderman remains third.

“It was a tough day, but we did fantastic”, Vingegaard responded afterwards. “The guys rode incredibly strong. The last metres were very tough. My congratulations to Nys. He is riding great here and I think he is going to have a great future. My goal was to keep the leader's jersey and I succeeded with verve. In tomorrow's sprint stage, I don't expect too many more problems, although we have to stay alert.”
