Vingegaard enters top five overall classification Tirreno
Jonas Vingegaard has finished seventh in the Tirreno’s difficult fifth stage in the company of some other favourites. This result moved him up to fourth in the general classification.
The fifth stage of Tirreno-Adriatico was the traditional ‘Tappa dei Muri’, the so-called wall ride with many short, steep climbs. It took a while before a front group was formed. Eventually, twelve riders managed to break away from the peloton and got a maximum lead of four minutes.
With less than ten kilometres to go, Vingegaard and a group of favourites went after the riders in front. However, they were sent in the wrong direction and eventually finished in a reduced peloton, at half a minute from winner Warren Barguil.
The Dane was at peace with it. “I was happy to be racing at the front again. It was a tough stage. When Evenepoel attacked, I was alert. I had the legs to follow him. Unfortunately, we went the wrong way. In the descent, it was hard to see the right turn coming.”
The Dane is in a good position in the standings. “It was a goal to be good in this Tirreno. My time trial was not good, but I am happy with my form. Tomorrow another tough stage awaits us. We’ll see how it will go.”
Then the Tirreno’s queen stage is on the programme. That sixth stage is 215 kilometres.
