Vigié sprints to tenth place in the second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos

Vigié sprints to tenth place in the second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos

Margaux Vigié sprinted to tenth place in the second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos. After finishing fourth in the opening stage, the 30-year-old French rider was unable to challenge for a podium place today.

In the second stage of the Spanish stage race, the sprinters were once again treated to a bunch sprint. Three riders formed the breakaway of the day, but failed to catch the peloton off guard. After the leaders were reeled in twenty kilometres from the finish line, a turbulent finale ensued with several attacks.

A large group, including Maud Oudeman, broke away and gained a handful of seconds on the peloton. However, it proved not enough to stay ahead. In the sprint that followed, Lorena Wiebes once again proved to be the strongest. Vigié, who found herself briefly boxed in following a crash, still managed to secure a place in the top ten thanks to a fine effort.

"The result is slightly less than yesterday, but if you look at Margaux’s sprint, she simply did well."

Jan Boven

"The result is slightly less than yesterday, but if you look at Margaux’s sprint, she simply did well", sports director Jan Boven said. "Whereas yesterday we were very well positioned in the final, today we ended up just behind a crash. Margaux got boxed in for a moment, had to start her sprint from a distance and consequently couldn’t get anywhere near the top places. Nevertheless, she rode a good sprint."

According to Boven, the main things to watch out for tomorrow are the start and the final. "The start is tricky; I’m curious to see if anything happens there. The final includes a lap with two climbs, which could make for an interesting finale. Maud and Rosita, in particular, will need to be extra alert here, as their rivals will undoubtedly see opportunities and go on the attack."
