Veenhoven sprints to sixth place in Trofee Maarten Wynants
In Trofee Maarten Wynants, Nienke Veenhoven managed to finish in sixth place. On the flat course in Helchteren, the race was decided after a group sprint.
On the final day of a successful La Vuelta Femenina, another Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women delegation was at the start of the Trofee Maarten Wynants in Helchteren. The peloton rode 116 kilometres on local laps in the Limburg municipality.
On the flat circuit, it was waiting for the first significant breakaway to emerge. With 75 kilometres to go, the attack of Henriette Colborne -who later got two more companions- turned out to be the right one. The trio extended their lead to a minute and a half. In the chasing group, Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women did its share of the work. After a long chase, the three riders were caught by the peloton three kilometres from the finish line. In the bunch sprint, Veenhoven eventually finished sixth.
“I launched my sprint a little too early”, Veenhoven responded afterwards. “In hindsight, it’s always disappointing to realize, but I’ll learn from this. I'm very satisfied with the work the teammates did on the road to reel in the breakaway riders. That teamwork was nice to see. I'm looking forward to the next sprinting opportunities that I will undoubtedly get this season.”
Sports director Jan Boven looks back on his team's race with satisfaction. “We were well positioned in the race from the start. The sprinter teams were mostly watching each other, so we decided to take control of the race. The breakaway eventually gained a lead of one and a half minutes. Mijntje and Rosita did an excellent job of getting the escapees back. After that, it was up to Margaux Vigié and Linda Riedmann to put Nienke in the best possible position.”
“The goal was to finish within the top five, but we can definitely be satisfied with this result”, Boven continued. “Nienke previously proved to be good with her results in Classic Brugge - De Panne and Scheldeprijs. We are taking steps forward in our development.”
