Van Dijke shows his potential in final stage of Deutschland Tour
Mick van Dijke has shown his potential in the final stage of the Deutschland Tour. In a difficult stage, he was part of the breakaway. From there, the young Dutchman fell just short of taking the stage win.
For Team Jumbo-Visma, the last day was all about attacking. "It was a tough day. Gijs, Tosh, Tobias and I had to jump along and we alternated well”, Van Dijke said. In the end, he went along in the breakaway. "It went fast from the start. I ended up in a twelve-rider group. Things didn't go well, so we ultimately escaped with seven."
"I felt really good"
With this group, Van Dijke also reached the local lap, which had to be ridden three times, including a tricky climb. Frenchman Romain Bardet attacked on the second ascent but saw Van Dijke counter. "I felt really good. I went along quite easily and could even accelerate."
After his attack, the Dutchman found himself riding solo at the front. "Everyone had given everything, so I knew I had to go solo as the cooperation was already not very effective anymore. Unfortunately, the others started to chase me and came back. From that moment on, the teamwork was gone. In the end, I wasn’t as strong anymore”, Van Dijke said.
