Van Dijke back on the attack in hill stage Tour de Pologne
Team Jumbo-Visma continued to attack in the fifth stage of the Tour de Pologne. Mick van Dijke dominated the stage but was caught by his escape companions in the final.
After Olav Kooij's victory on Tuesday, the peloton was in for a high-altitude stage on Wednesday. Mick van Dijke attacked early on and took four riders with him in an early breakaway. The advantage of the five grew to five minutes, but as the peloton picked up the pace on the final categorised climb, the lead quickly dwindled.
Van Dijke was caught by the peloton about 20 kilometres from the finish. Marijn van den Berg won the sprint of the remaining peloton. Van Dijke, Tobias Foss and Sam Oomen finished in the same group. Oomen maintained his position in the general classification. An individual time trial is scheduled for Thursday.
"I regret I couldn't get a result"
"My goal before the race was to be in the breakaway", Van Dijke said. "We managed to do that. We knew it was going to be a tough day. I survived the climbs well, and for a short while, I thought the breakaway might succeed. The gap became so small on the local laps that I let go to save some energy. I was still hoping to sprint for the stage win in the final. I was still in a reasonable position going into the last corner but lost my position in the frenzy. I regret I couldn't get a good result in the sprint. It is what it is."
