Tulett just misses podium in second stage of Coppi e Bartali
Ben Tulett finished fourth in the second stage of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali. The 23-year-old Brit from Team Visma | Lease a Bike put in a strong effort on the final climb but couldn’t prevent Paul Double from claiming the victory.
A day after the flat opening stage, the peloton faced a challenging day in the rolling Italian countryside. After an early breakaway of three riders was reeled in, the GC contenders prepared for the final ascent to Sogliano. Tulett, who recently secured second place in Milano-Torino, was well-positioned and climbed alongside the best.
Together with Paul Widar and Diego Ulissi, he set off in pursuit of Paul Double, who had attacked at the foot of the climb. Despite closing in on the leader, Double managed to hold on for the win, leaving Tulett to settle for fourth place. "It was a tough stage. The course was constantly up and down, and the pace remained high all day," Tulett said after the race.
"Unfortunately, I got boxed in and lost some momentum."
"When Paul attacked in the final, I knew it wasn’t up to me to close the gap. I tried to use the other teams to put myself in a strong position for the sprint. I waited as long as possible and trusted my finishing kick. But just as I was about to launch, I got boxed in and lost some momentum. That was unfortunate."
Despite missing out on a podium spot, Tulett remains positive about his performance. "I think there was more in it today, but I’m glad I stuck to my plan. I have full confidence that the results will come if we keep going like this. Once again, I’m grateful to the team for their support."
