Tulett has another good day and moves up to second place in Coppi e Bartali classification
Ben Tulett achieved another top-ten ranking in the third stage of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali. In the rain-soaked stage, the 23-year-old Brit from Team Visma | Lease a Bike crossed the line in eighth place. In the general classification, Tulett moved up to second place.
In the third stage of the Italian five-day race, the riders again had to tackle several hills. In harsh conditions, four riders grabbed a maximum lead of three minutes, but through the efforts of Team Visma | Lease a Bike, the breakaway riders were reeled in about 30 kilometres from the finish.
On the descent of the penultimate climb, Jay Vine and Mauri Vansevenant rode away from the peloton, after which Jørgen Nordhagen put himself at the head of the bunch. The young Norwegian gave his all in service of Tulett, but could not prevent Vine from reaching the finish line solo. Tulett crossed the line in the chasing group and saw many competitors lose time.
"The guys tried to keep Ben at the front as much as possible and they did a fantastic job."
"We had two goals today: ride for the stage win and move up in the GC. The win was out of the question at one point, but in the general classification we accomplished our mission", sports director Robert Wagner said. "The weather conditions combined with the difficult course made it a tough day. The guys tried to keep Ben at the front as much as possible and they did a fantastic job."
"Development riders Tim, William and Pietro also played a big part today. They deserve a big compliment, including the rest of the team", Wagner said. In the standings, Tulett occupies second place and needs to make up a few seconds on Magnus Sheffield. "Everything is still possible. There are two tough stages coming up and we will give everything for the win. The morale is good at least."
