Tulett crowns strong race with third place in Faun Drôme Classic (+VIDEO)

Ben Tulett capped off a strong performance with a third-place finish in the Faun Drôme Classic. In the French one-day race, the 23-year-old Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider stayed at the front and won the sprint of the peloton. Juan Ayuso claimed victory with a solo effort.

With newcomer Axel Zingle and Dylan van Baarle, who recently recovered from a collarbone fracture, the peloton set off on a 190-kilometer journey through the French hills. Six riders formed the breakaway of the day, gaining a maximum lead of four minutes. Shortly after the escapees were reeled in, Ayuso launched his attack, gradually pulling away from his rivals.

Behind him, Tulett and Attila Valter tried to close the gap, but the Spaniard remained unshaken and soloed to victory. Behind first chaser Mathias Skjelmose, Tulett impressively won the sprint of the peloton. The young Brit launched early in the final uphill meters and held on strongly. "This is a great way to end the weekend", Tulett said.

"My sprint went even better than expected."

Ben Tulett

"As a team, we rode a very strong race. The final was tough, and my sprint perhaps went even better than expected. Initially, we wanted Axel to contest the sprint for third place, but I felt good and was able to hold on until the finish. In the end, this was the best possible outcome. Ayuso showed an incredibly high level today and deserved the win. We can definitely be happy with how we performed."

Sports director Maarten Wynants was also pleased with Tulett’s third place. "Yesterday, things didn’t go our way, but today, fortune was more on our side. I think we got the absolute maximum out of it with this third place. We knew we had to start the sprint early because it was a technical finish. Ben executed it perfectly. He picked the right line and secured a well-earned podium spot."
