Teunissen to fifth place in bunch sprint Tirreno

The sixth stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico has ended in a bunch sprint. In the streets of Senigallia, the sprinters decided who would take the stage victory. Mike Teunissen joined the battle for the win on behalf of Team Jumbo-Visma and finished fifth.

The breakaway of the day was caught well before the finish, after which the sprint trains of different teams showed themselves at the front of the peloton. Team Jumbo-Visma also tried to set up a sprint train in the hectic final. Teunissen was unable to keep Belgian champion Tim Merlier from winning the stage.

“During the stage we decided that I would go for the sprint today”, Teunissen said. “The team kept me in good position in the final. In the last kilometre I was pushed away a bit, which meant that I had to come from far back in the final sprint. I don’t have the pure speed to make up that distance at such a fast pace. I am happy with how things are going this week. Every day I feel better and stronger, so that’s good.”
