Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women lay low in fifth stage Giro d'Italia
Team Visma | Lease a Bike did not play a significant role in the bunch sprint in the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia Women. The highest ranked rider of the Dutch cycling team in the general classification, Femke de Vries, finished neatly in the front group behind winner Lotte Kopecky. The team, however, loses two key riders with the withdrawal of Rosita Reijnhout and Fem van Empel.
Reijnhout did not start this morning in Frontone. The rider still suffered too much from her crash in the fourth stage. Early in the almost flat stage, Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women suffered another setback. Fem van Empel was involved in a crash and had to abandon the race. The 21-year-old rider was taken to hospital for examination.
After almost three hours of racing, Kopecky was ultimately the fastest in the bunch sprint. De Vries finished at the front of the peloton and currently maintains her eighteenth place in the general classification. Lieke Nooijen had a strong day and ensured that De Vries was well positioned in the Italian sun. “The pace was high today. We were still hoping for a late attack, but the bunch sprint was unavoidable. We were well-positioned all day."
Over the next few days, there will be a lot of climbing in the final stages of the eight-day stage race. “We are here with Femke for the general classification. I hope to contribute to this in the coming days”, Nooijen said. Maud Oudeman also sees an important role for herself in the final weekend. “I was able to save some energy today and after a difficult start this Giro I am doing better now. Tomorrow will be all about supporting Femke on the climbs.”
