Team Jumbo-Visma can’t make a difference in classic Giro stage
Team Jumbo-Visma has not been able to play a leading role in the eighth stage of the Giro d'Italia. The team was not part of a large and early breakaway. Thomas De Gendt won the stage.
From the start, many riders tried to be in the breakaway. In the end, 21 riders managed, but Team Jumbo-Visma wasn’t among them.
For a long time, the difference between the peloton and the escapees was about two minutes, but the difference increased close to the finish. As a result, several breakaway riders were able to ride for the win in Naples.
"The tempo was high the whole day"
"For the viewers at home it may have looked easier than it actually was. The tempo was high the whole day”, said Koen Bouwman. Yesterday's stage winner rode in the blue mountain jersey for the first time. "Tomorrow, we will have a tough day. The Blockhaus will be heavy. It's the first time I will ride it. We will see tomorrow. If I have the right legs, I will try again. Of course I want to get points for the mountain classification and defend the jersey, but I prefer to win another stage”, Bouwman explained his plans.
"I couldn't connect with the riders in the front"
Edoardo Affini tried to catch the leaders at the beginning of the stage. "It was a fast opening phase. Right from the start it rained attacks. I tried to be in a breakaway, but I couldn't connect with the riders in the front. As a result, we had to chase in the peloton. I expect our team to do good things again tomorrow. It will be a very different day.”
