Seventh place for Kooij on Teunissen’s comeback in Hungary

Olav Kooij has finished seventh in the bunch sprint in the opening stage of the Tour of Hungary. Mike Teunissen returned to racing after an injury and rode his first race of the season.

The five-day race began with a 173 kilometre stage from Siófok to Kaposvár. Nothing seemed to stand in the way of a bunch sprint. Three riders tried to change this, but this proved to be in vain.

Team Jumbo-Visma was very much in the forefront of the peloton in the final stage. It was Teunissen who brought Kooij to the front. The young Dutchman joined the bunch sprint, with the seventh place as a final result.

"Personally I like the way I rode today. It was nice to ride in a peloton again."

Teunissen said that the feeling was like old times. “It was a relatively quiet stage today. It was expected that a group with a few escapees would ride in front for most of the day. The final was pretty hectic. Nevertheless, we managed to get Olav in a good position. Unfortunately he lost my wheel in the last metres before the sprint and I didn’t have enough power left to sprint. Olav was trapped and unfortunately he finished seventh. Perhaps a higher classification could have been possible. Personally I like the way I rode today. It was nice to ride in a peloton again. On to new opportunities in the coming days”, the Dutchman concluded.
