Oomen proves himself in mountain stage Tour de Pologne, but good result eludes him

Team Jumbo-Visma has not been able to achieve a remarkable result in the second stage of the Tour de Pologne. The finish was on a steep climb to Karpacz, where Slovenian Matej Mohorič crossed the line first.

Three breakaways opened up a significant gap on the peloton. In the hilly finale, the battle started for the stage win in the longest stage of the Polish stage race.

Team Jumbo-Visma positioned Tobias Foss and Sam Oomen for the steep final climb. Oomen attacked with three kilometres to go but was soon overtaken by Rafal Majka and Lennert Van Eetvelt. He could stay between them and the rest of the peloton for a long time, but in the final kilometre, he had to give in, just like the duo in front and was no longer in contention for the day's win. Oomen crossed the line in 28th place, 41 seconds behind winner Mohorič.

"It was a gamble that didn't yield the desired result."

Sports director Maarten Wynants

Sports director Maarten Wynants: "It was a long run-up to the final. The GC teams only attacked in the last 60 kilometres. That's when the pace in the peloton picked up. Sam and Tobias were with the best for a long time. Sam felt good and attacked on the last climb. It was a gamble that didn't yield the desired result.”

According to Wynants, it is time to do things differently. "In the end, it was too hard for our riders. For tomorrow's mountain stage, we have to concentrate on attacking. We have put the GC out of our minds for now, but we still want to win a stage.”

Jos van Emden and Olav Kooij crashed about 50 kilometres from the finish line, but both continued on quickly. The same was true for Mick van Dijke, who crashed shortly afterwards.
