Markus outsmarts sprinters and solos to victory in Veenendaal - Veenendaal Classic

Riejanne Markus has won the fourth edition of the Veenendaal - Veenendaal Classic. The 29-year-old rider from Team Visma | Lease a Bike launched an attack with eleven kilometers to go and reached the finish line solo. It was Markus's first victory of the season.

The course, consisting of four laps of 35 kilometers, featured two obstacles: the Grebbeberg and the Paardenveld. After a group of seven riders was caught with sixteen kilometers to go, Markus saw her chance to attack. The Dutch time trial champion immediately gained a gap on the soaking wet road, but never more than fifteen seconds.

The peloton did everything to catch Markus, but the runner-up of La Vuelta Femenina held on cleverly, delivering her team its seventh victory of the season. "I'm super happy with this. My dad sent me a message this morning: 'The Markus family hasn't won this race yet'. Dad, here it is,” Markus said after her impressive solo.

"I knew I had an advantage with the many corners and rainy roads."

"On the final climb of the Paardenveld I was eager to give it a try. At first I was disappointed that I was boxed in for a long time, because I thought it would be too short to get away. Eventually I was able to find a gap and got away solo. The peloton was always close behind me, but I knew I had an advantage with the many corners and rainy roads. I just kept going and thought: let’s see where this ends. Luckily, I managed to stay away and crossed the finish line solo."
