Markus competes again with best in sixth stage La Vuelta Femenina

Riejanne Markus again made her GC ambitions clear in the sixth stage of La Vuelta Femenina. On the slopes of La Laguna Negra, the rider from Team Visma | Lease a Bike climbed with the best and crossed the line in fourth place. Markus maintained her third place in the overall standings.

For the second day in a row the riders were presented with an uphill finish. A breakaway of four attempted to start the ascent of La Laguna Negra with a lead, but thanks in part to the efforts of Team Visma | Lease a Bike the quartet failed in that mission. Marianne Vos took maximum points at the intermediate sprint and increased her position in the points classification.

At the foot of the final climb, Markus was well-positioned by her teammates. The Dutch time trial champion followed Demi Vollering for a long time, but had to leave a small gap when Vollering and Evita Muzic accelerated. Muzic took the day's victory, while Markus crossed the finish line just behind in fourth place.

"In the GC I am now in third place and I'm very happy with that."

"The legs felt good today. I was competing with Elisa (Longo Borghini) and Yara (Kastelijn) for third place and at the end I managed to create a small gap with Elisa. In the general classification I am now in third place and I am very happy with that," Markus said.

Vos also looks back on the sixth stage with satisfaction. "It was a good day, although it was quite a long stage because of the headwind. Along the way I picked up some points for the green jersey and then it was up to Riejanne to do the hardest work. She did that very well."
