Leemreize confirms great potential with top ten ranking in Giro d'Italia queen stage
Team Jumbo-Visma has also attacked in the last mountain stage of the Giro d'Italia. In the queen stage, Gijs Leemreize and Sam Oomen rode in front for almost the entire day. Both riders refused to give up, gave everything and finished in the top fifteen of the day's results.
The lead of Leemreize and Oomen’s group was no more than six minutes. During the 168-kilometre stage, three Dolomite giants had to be conquered. It included the Passo Pordoi, the summit of this Giro with over two thousand metres, and the final climb of the steep Passo Fedaial.
At fifty kilometres from the finish, the later winner Alessandro Covi rode away from his fellow escapees. Leemreize and Oomen had to let go, but they did not give up. Working together, the two rejoined the chasing escapees just before the top of the Passo Pordoi, this year's Cima Coppi. Leemreize subsequently rode to an excellent seventh place in the day's result. Oomen finished fifteenth.
"This is the best race I have ridden in my career"
For the fifth time this Giro, Leemreize rode to a top ten classification. "This was the toughest stage”, Leemreize said. "I didn't feel fresh at the beginning. I was in the last wheel and had a hard time. Fortunately, I maintained my power on all the climbs, while the rest got more tired. It was really tough and I never had the feeling that I was going to get a good result. In the end I succeeded, however, by becoming seventh. I never expected that I would ride such a good first grand tour. It surprised me a bit. This is the best race I have ridden in my career."
"I didn't take any unnecessary risks"
Koen Bouwman tried to be in the breakaway again. The blue mountain jersey wearer did not succeed, but he crossed the finish line with a smile. "I did not have the legs to be in the lead and didn't take any unnecessary risks. Until the foot of the final climb, I kept in the peloton. Then I went up the climb at my own pace. Tomorrow it is important to finish in Verona safely. I think we can show some good things. I am looking forward to tomorrow."
