Laporte sprints to second place in fourth stage of Renewi Tour

Christophe Laporte just missed out on victory in the fourth stage of the Renewi Tour. The 31-year-old Frenchman sprinted to second place behind stage winner Jasper Philipsen. Thanks to the bonification seconds gained, Laporte moved up to fifth place in the general classification.

The wind made for a nervous start to the stage. Mick van Dijke, Tiesj Benoot, Per Strand Hagenes and Laporte were alert and were part of the first echelon group. However, everything came together again and although several leading groups tried to surprise the sprinters' teams, a bunch sprint was inevitable.

Laporte was well-positioned and sprinted to second place. "The team did a great job and dropped me off in a good position. I was in Jasper's wheel and that turned out to be a good choice. In the sprint, he was simply too fast", Laporte said.

"I hope I have the legs to go for the stage win."

Mick van Dijke crashed in the final kilometre and reached the finish with some scratches. "Per, Christophe and I were well in front in the last kilometres. The moment I wanted to go on, I was crashed. Fortunately Christophe made up for the day with a nice second place", Van Dijke said.

Tomorrow, the Renewi Tour ends with a gruelling stage to Geraardsbergen. Laporte is looking forward to it with a lot of confidence. "I hope I have the legs to go for the stage win. The course suits me, so if I feel good, I hope to show something great."
