Kooij concludes Tour de Pologne with second place in final stage
Olav Kooij has finished second in the seventh stage of the Tour de Pologne. In the final stage to Krakow, only Arnaud Démare was faster. In the past week in Poland, the young sprinter of Team Jumbo-Visma achieved four top-five results, including his first victory at WorldTour-level.
The ambitions of Team Jumbo-Visma in this final stage were clear. Michel Hessmann rode at the head of the pack for a long time to ensure that the handful of escapees did not get too far away. Thanks in part to the work of his teammates, Kooij was able to prepare for another bunch sprint shortly afterwards. The 20-year-old sprinter wriggled his way to the front in the final metres, but Démare proved too fast.
"As a team, we can reflect on a successful Tour de Pologne"
"Second place always comes with an aftertaste. We were close to another victory”, sports director Arthur van Dongen said. "However, it is something we can live with. Realistically, this is again an excellent performance by Olav. The team did a great job today, as well as the rest of the week. Before this race, our goal was to go for at least one stage win, which we succeeded at. We have been close to a second victory several times. Olav was able to take the next step in his development here. He will take that with him to the next races. The guys who accompanied him in the sprints also rode a strong race. As a team, we can reflect on a successful Tour de Pologne."
