Double for Vingegaard in second stage O Gran Camiño
Jonas Vingegaard has won the second stage of O Gran Camiño in an impressive way. On the final climb, the 27-year-old Dane of Team Visma | Lease a Bike dropped his competitors before reaching the line in Chantada solo. He also became the new general classification leader.
On another rainy day in Galicia, the riders were presented with a tough hill stage with the double climb of the Alto de San Pedro de Licora on the menu. An early breakaway of 12 riders was given breathing space by the peloton, in which Team Visma | Lease a Bike controlled the pace towards the finale. At seven kilometres from the line, Vingegaard launched his attack. Only Egan Bernal and Jefferson Cepeda seemed to be able to follow the pace of the two-time Tour winner, but they eventually had to let go after an ultimate acceleration.
"I am very satisfied with this win," Vingegaard responded afterwards. "Because of the cold and the rain, it was anything but pleasant today. Nevertheless, we still managed to put in a strong team performance. The guys rode very strongly, so I'm happy that I could reward their work with a win. They deserved it."
"Conditioneel gezien sta ik waar ik wilde staan"
Just like last season, Vingegaard managed to take his first win of the season on day two of the Spanish stage race. "I like to race in Galicia, even though it wasn't the best weather conditions," the Dane laughed. "This was my fourth stage win here, although this one was definitely not easy. With Bernal I had a tough competitor for the stage win. In terms of form, I am already where I wanted to be. I'm looking forward to the next stages."
