Disappointing day for Team Jumbo-Visma at Amstel Gold Race
Team Jumbo-Visma has missed out on a podium place at the Amstel Gold Race. Tosh Van der Sande was the Dutch team's only rider in an early attack, but the Belgian rider was forced to let his companions go on the Cauberg. Tadej Pogacar took the win.
The final of the Dutch classic broke open early on. With less than 100 kilometres, sixteen riders escaped from the pack after a seven-man breakaway was caught. Tosh Van der Sande joined Tadej Pogacar and Tom Pidcock. The Team Jumbo-Visma rider had initiated the breakaway but had to let his companions go on the Cauberg.
Fifty kilometres from the finish line, a big crash rocked the peloton. Attila Valter was involved, but the damage was limited to scratches. As a result of the crash, the peloton broke into pieces. Benoot was part of the first chasing group and made several attempts to catch up with Pogacar. The group caught several breakaway riders but never saw the race leader again. Benoot eventually finished fifteenth.
"I didn't have a great day"
"I didn't have a great day", the Belgian rider said. "When the guys got away on the Vrakelberg, I was in 40th position. It was a narrow road, and I had little time to anticipate. Also, several teams were not in the lead, so I hoped we could still come back. We came close on the Eyserbosweg, but unfortunately, it didn't work out."
According to sports director Frans Maassen, his team was unable to become competitive during the race. "From the moment Pogacar's group got away, the race was over for us. We were still hoping they wouldn't cooperate well at the front, but surprisingly, they did. All in all, it's a disappointing day."
