Benoot seventh in attractive Bretagne Classic

Benoot seventh in attractive Bretagne Classic

Tiesj Benoot has finished seventh in the Bretagne Classic. The Jumbo-Visma rider attacked several times on the hilly course around Plouay but missed out on the decisive attack. Valentin Madouas won the race.

Mick van Dijke broke the race open on a tricky gravel section. The Dutchman rode away from the peloton together with Stefan Küng. For a long time, the two maintained a one-and-a-half-minute lead, but at the start of the final, Van Dijke had to let Küng go.

Van Dijke's move was the signal for Benoot to attack. The winner of Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne took to the pedals on several climbs and single-handedly caused the elite group to thin out considerably. On the final local lap, Benoot could not join the decisive attack. The Belgian tried to close the gap just before the line, but his valiant effort was in vain.

"We are in good shape for the Canadian races."

Robert Wagner

"It was a hot day”, sports director Robert Wagner said. "Christophe Laporte was overcome by the heat at one point and dropped out of the peloton. Otherwise, our team was solid across the board. Mick tried to anticipate well. He just bumped into a strong Küng and could not keep his wheel. After that, Tiesj gave everything he had and attacked a lot. Seventh place is a fair result in the end. It is a pity that we are not on the podium, but our riders rode a great race. We are in good shape for the Canadian races.”
