Assertive De Vries third in third stage Tour de Suisse
Femke de Vries showed her strongest side in the third stage of the Tour de Suisse. The Dutchwoman could keep up with the best for a long time but came up short on the day's final climb. Neve Bradbury won the third stage.
In the third stage of the Swiss stage race, five riders, including De Vries, chose the breakaway after 30 kilometers. The riders created a three-minute lead and began the day's final climb with a two-minute advantage. De Vries fought for what she was worth on the flanks of the Route de Champagne, but unfortunately could not keep up the pace. De Vries crossed the line in third place, ensuring that she entered the top ten of the general classification.
"I am very happy with my performance," De Vries says with a smile. "I was well positioned, which put me in the breakaway. In the beginning, I thought, What did I get myself into? But I soon realized that I had good legs. Unfortunately, I couldn't keep up the pace on the last climb of the day, but I gave everything until the finish. It was nice that I won the sprint as well; I didn't expect that."
"I didn't expect to be able to compete at this level already"
De Vries, riding her second race for the team, moved up to 10th place in the overall standings. "I didn't expect to be able to compete at this level already. I grabbed the opportunity I was given to ride with this team with both hands, and it's nice that it's paying off. That I can keep up with the best in this field of riders makes me feel really good."
