Affini second in Vuelta a Burgos time trial, Kuss retains leader's jersey
Edoardo Affini narrowly missed out on a stage victory in the time trial of the Vuelta a Burgos. The Italian rider finished just eleven seconds behind the winner. Sepp Kuss retained his leading position in the overall standing.
Affini was one of the early starters on the 18.5-kilometer course from Santa María del Campo to Pampliega, equipped with a special front wheel. On the mostly flat roads, the Italian posted the first top time of the day.
Affini remained in the hot seat for a long time until Australian Jay Vine beat his time. Affini then watched as his teammate Kuss managed to hold on to the leader's jersey. The American was among the best at the first intermediate point, and his time at the finish line was good enough to limit the damage. Kuss maintained a five-second lead over his closest rival, Max Poole. The final stage will take place on Friday.
"It was a good time trial," Affini said afterward. "I put a lot of energy into the first section. The headwind made it quite tough, but I tried to make the most of it. Overall, I think the ride went well, but unfortunately, Jay was faster. He’s a well-deserved winner. It’s a shame to come so close to victory again, but I can be satisfied with my performance today."
"I can be satisfied with my performance"
The 28-year-old rider is already looking forward to Friday’s final stage. "As a team, we'll give it our all to help Sepp cross the finish line in the leader’s jersey. It would be a great way to cap off what has been a good week for us here at the Vuelta a Burgos."
