Australian all-rounder Broe strong link in new five-person sports management of Team Visma | Lease a Bike

Australian all-rounder Broe strong link in new five-person sports management of Team Visma | Lease a Bike

Patrick Broe will be one of the five members of Team Visma | Lease a Bike's sports management starting in October. The Australian has been working for the Dutch team for more than a year, but from 1 October, he will be involved at a management level. An introduction.

Broe was born 31 years ago in Brisbane, Australia. "I grew up in London but did my education in my home town. I studied law and later worked as a lawyer, as did my wife", Broe says.

The Australian explains how he fell in love with cycling. "Australia is not traditionally a cycling-crazy country. But in 2011, our fellow countryman Cadel Evans won the Tour de France. The country's sports fans were hooked. Since then, I found myself watching more and more races. A few years later, I was watching cycling on TV every day. I created the Lantern Rouge YouTube channel. At first, it was just a hobby. Later, partly because of the coronavirus crisis, it became popular.

"And so the Lantern Rouge Cycling Podcast was born. The big problem was the time difference between Australia and Europe, where most of the races are held. I decided to move to Europe with my wife. We currently live in Andorra, and we love it. I am now working full-time in cycling. It has been a dream all these years."

Broe first came into contact with Team Visma | Lease a Bike in 2022. "It was in January or February of that year. It started with video analysis. That's where the collaboration began, and it has intensified over the years."

He joined the team as a consultant. From October, Broe will officially become part of the Dutch team's new five-person sports management team. Along with Grischa Niermann, Mathieu Heijboer, Robbert de Groot and Jacco Verhaeren, he will be one of the sports policymakers. "My role is mainly to work out the race strategy. This involves analysing the competition, our strengths and weaknesses, and the course of the various races. I also give advice on how best to prepare for a race. My duties not only include short-term work. For example, I look for young, talented riders who share the team's values and goals. I will also try to advise the commercial team with innovative ideas", Broe explains.

"It's an exciting project"

"The goal is to win the biggest races together", he says. "I want to contribute to that. A big wish is to win the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix with the team. It is also a personal ambition to be part of the team that has won the most Grand Tours in cycling history. The whole approach of the team is based on making sporting history. We are all working together to create a legacy. Getting to the top is the first step, but staying there is much harder. It's an exciting project. I'm proud to be part of it."

Broe has already had a good time getting used to Team Visma | Lease a Bike and the Netherlands. "The working atmosphere is great. Everyone is honest and open. Everyone wants to get the best out of themselves and each other every day. Everyone knows their role. It's very professional. And it's not just the riders who win, it's the whole team. I also like the Dutch culture. Everyone is straightforward and very friendly."
