Fan Peloton talk: 'Walking around the headquarters was a childhood dream'
In our new column ‘Fan Peloton talk’, we put members of the Fan Peloton in the spotlight. Who are they, why do they feel connected to Team Visma | Lease a Bike and who is their favourite rider? In the third episode, we have a chat with David Brugmans.
Name: David Brugmans
Age: 49 years old
Residence: Sint-Truiden (Belgium)
What is the reason you signed up for Team Visma | Lease a Bike's Fan Peloton?
"I joined last year because I like to be informed about everything. As a fan, we get information about the teams, the jerseys and the races the riders are working towards. It inspires me to see how the team is progressing."
What events have you been to?
"In 2023, I have been to the sales day and was able to pick up some goodies. To be able to walk around the headquarters was a childhood dream for me. Last year I would have liked to go there too, but unfortunately I could not make it.
Furthermore, I recently participated in an online ROUVY event where Wout van Aert was also present. It is virtual, but still you get the feeling you belong with the team. I have participated in such events in the past. For me, those are the little things that make membership even more fun."
In what way do you feel involved with the team?
"Last month was the team presentation and although it took place in Allicante, I really felt like I was present. For me, that is really an added value of being a member. I also enjoy getting photos and videos from the WhatsApp group about the training sessions, new team members and things happening at headquarters. Another nice bonus is that we get some articles earlier than the rest of the world."
"It's admirable that Wout comes back every time and says, ‘People, keep believing in me’."
Why are you a fan of Team Visma | Lease a Bike?
"That actually started since Wout van Aert joined the team. I am a big Wout van Aert fan, although I can also enjoy the team's aura. They take good care of the riders, the material and everything around it. When you go to watch cycling, you always pick a favourite and hope the one you are a fan of ends up on the podium. I'm someone who has the television on all day to cheer on Wout and the team."
Why is Wout your favourite rider?
"Wout has had so many setbacks in his career. I find it admirable that he comes back every time and says, ‘People, keep believing in me’. He never gives up and does everything he can to return to the highest level. I like that persistence, I'm secretly jealous of that."
Are you an avid cyclist yourself?
"I used to cycle a lot, but due to my studies I stopped. When I suffered a burn-out six years ago, I picked up cycling again. It's nice that during a ride you can clear your head and put your mind at zero. I'm ramping up my training, because in March I'm riding a race in Belgium, in April I'm competing in the Tour of Flanders and in May I'm going to climb Mont Ventoux."
What would make membership even better for you?
"I would love it if we were invited to one of those hospitality programmes. I think it would be great to be able to join the team for a day and get a meet-and-greet with some of the riders."
