The five most beautiful moments of Vingegaard's Tour de France

Jonas Vingegaard turned 26 today! To celebrate his birthday, we look back at his victory of the Tour de France. From the start in Denmark to the yellow jersey in Paris. It was a Tour full of highlights for Team Jumbo-Visma. That is why we have selected five beautiful moments of the Dane.

Team presentation in Denmark

For the first time in cycling history, the Grand Départ of the Tour de France took place in Denmark, Vingegaard's home country. Thousands of cycling fans came to the spectacle. Vingegaard, second in the Tour behind Tadej Pogacar a year earlier, was visibly emotional and enjoyed the enthusiasm of his compatriots.

Conquest of the yellow on the Granon

After four strong first days, everything seemed to go wrong for Team Jumbo-Visma in the 'cobbled stage'. Nevertheless, Primoz Roglic and Vingegaard remained at a limited disadvantage in the general classification behind Pogacar, the wearer of the yellow jersey. In the eleventh stage, from Albertville to Col du Granon, the Dutch cycling formation seized power. Attack after attack by both riders became too much for Pogacar four kilometers below the top. Vingegaard was unstoppable and crossed the finish line solo. It marked his first stage win in the Tour de France.

Masterpiece on the Hautacam

The eighteenth stage takes the peloton from Lourdes to Hautacam and is the last mountain stage of the Tour. Pogacar sees it as his last chance to ride Vingegaard out of the yellow jersey. Risks are taken and that leads to Pogacar crashing on the descent. Vingegaard waits and shows his sportsmanship. Wout van Aert, in front of the leading group all day long, comes to support the Dane and manages to drop Pogacar. Vingegaard sees his chance and wins his second stage. He also secures the polka dot jersey on top of the Hautacam.

Yellow jersey in Paris

Back in Paris, all eyes are on just one team, Team Jumbo-Visma. Vingegaard enters the podium with a win in the general and mountains classification. It was a fantastic Tour de France, in which the Dutch cycling formation ruled for three weeks and every rider had an important share in the yellow dream. It produces beautiful images!

Thousands of people in Denmark

By a private jet, Vingegaard was flown to Denmark for the tribute. Tens of thousands of people had gathered to catch a glimpse of the Tour winner. Thus the Tour de France 2022 concluded on the square in Copenhagen, where the cycling madness all began less than four weeks earlier.
