Kooij picked up his first victories of the cycling season in France. He won two stages in the Circuit Cycliste Sarthe and so the final classification.

In his next race, the Tour of Hungary, Kooij is again the fastest in the bunch sprint of the first stage. A crash in the race the day after ended his ambitions in Hungary.

A month later, a recovered Kooij shows that he is the best sprinter in the ZLM Tour. He triumphs in three stages and thus also wins the final classification. In that way he showed his strong development as a rider to the Dutch crowd.

At the end of July, Kooij achieved his biggest victory of his cycling career so far. An excellent lead-out by Mike Teunissen was expertly completed by the then twenty-year-old rider. It marked his first victory in a World Tour race.

In August, Kooij and Team Jumbo-Visma experienced an extremely successful week in Denmark. The Dutchman adds two stages to his palmares and Christophe Laporte completes the party by winning the final classification. In the third stage, Kooij and Laporte even made it a one-two by crossing the finish line together.

After the World Championships U23, where Kooij finished fifth, there were still a number of one-day races on the program. In Germany he beats several top sprinters and ends his successful season in style!
