Roglic concludes season as number one in the world after finishing seventh in Lombardia
In his last race of the season, a combative Primoz Roglic has finished seventh in the Giro di Lombardia. The Slovenian leader of Team Jumbo-Visma attacked several times in the final of the ‘race of the falling leaves’ but did not manage to get away. The victory went to Bauke Mollema. After his recent victories in the Vuelta a Espana, the Giro dell’Emilia and the Tre Valli Varesine, the Slovenian rider of Team Jumbo-Visma will conclude his season as the number one rider in the world.
In the last monumental race of this season, everything initially went according to plan for Team Jumbo-Visma. An early breakaway was caught on the Colma di Sormano. Team Jumbo-Visma then took over the initiative with Robert Gesink, George Bennett and Sepp Kuss. On the Civiglio climb, the favourites kept looking at each other, after which Mollema was able to win the race. Roglic tried to close the gap in the last ten kilometres, but didn’t succeed.
“As the saying goes: when two dogs fight over a bone, a third runs away with it”, Roglic said. “The other guys mainly looked at me to chase, but Bauke was the best out there today and deserved the win. My compliments to the team as well. The team was very strong, but I didn’t expect anything else. This was my most successful season to date. Last week, I also showed that I am able to compete for the win in one-day races. But above all I am most happy with the fact that I am finishing the season as number one in the world.”
