Groenewegen sprints to second place in Tour of Britain

Dylan Groenewegen finished second in the second stage of the Tour of Britain. Team LottoNL-Jumbo's 24-year-old rider achieved that result in a hectic sprint through the streets of Blyth. The victory went to Elia Viviani, after the disqualification of the faster Edvald Boasson Hagen.

The stage was characterized by a long escape. That was to be expected, as today was the Tour of Britain’s longest stage, 211 kilometres long. Eventually, the seven-man breakaway could be caught in time.

For sprinter Groenewegen it was the first time with Gijs Van Hoecke in the sprint train. "He, Jos van Emden and I found each other well", Groenewegen said about the last kilometres. "I lost them one kilometre ahead of the finish line, but we solved that very quickly. Then the sprint started from far away and initially two men were stronger. The preparation with Gijs and Jos has given me a lot of confidence. I’m looking forward to the next few days", said Groenewegen.
