Groenewegen misses out on opportunity in Tour of Britain

In the first stage of the Tour of Britain, Dylan Groenewegen couldn't play a role in the sprint. The Dutchman dropped from the peloton on one of the climbs and wasn't able to return. Caleb Ewan was the fastest rider in the bunch sprint, while Gijs Van Hoecke was the first rider of Team LottoNL-Jumbo to cross the finish line.

"We had the plan to sprint with Dylan, but it didn't work out", Sports Director Jan Boven said after the stage to Kelso, Scotland.

The stage started in Edinburgh. Due to the strong winds, echelons appeared. But 50 kilometres from the finish line, the peloton reconvened. On the last climb, a few riders set up a strong pace in the peloton.

"Dylan couldn't follow the peloton, together with a few other riders. We didn't manage it well as a team, that's too bad", Boven explained. The other five Team LottoNL-Jumbo riders crossed the finish line in the first group.
