Attack Campenaerts strands in final kilometres Omloop Eurometropool

Victor Campenaerts has not been able to surprise in the first edition of the Omloop Eurometropool today. With 32 kilometres to go the Belgian escaped but got caught by the peloton eight kilometres before the finish line. In the bunch sprint, which was won by André Greipel, Twan Castelijns was the best-ranked rider of Team LottoNL-Jumbo with the eighth place.

Sports director Frans Maassen believes that Castelijns did fine with the eight place. "It was not easy to compete with Greipel and Kittel", he said. "The fact that Twan finished eighth is a decent result.”

Earlier in the race, with thirty kilometres to go, it looked like Victor Campenaerts could go for the victory. At that moment, an escape group of seven riders had been formed. Eventually, the Belgian remained with one other fellow escapee, but he was caught with eight kilometres to go. "We have raced aggressively and were widely represented in front. Tomorrow during the Tour de l'Eurométropole we are likely to start with the same battle plan”, Maassen said.
