A chat with: Dennis van Winden

Dennis van Winden crashed in Omloop het Nieuwsblad. The verdict was a dislocated little finger. On Tuesday, he had a surgery. Time for an update!
How was the surgery?
The surgery went well. Only my arm was anesthetized. The surgeon is happy with the result and thinks that we made a good decision.
Was surgery unavoidable?
Yes, a part of the bone in my little finger was broken. It wasn’t able to grow back. They put two pins in my little finger to fix the broken bone. The surgery took a little over an hour.
Did it hurt a lot?
No, it hasn’t and it still doesn’t hurt very much. I wasn’t happy to hear that they had to operate. I was wondering if I needed one, but I did.
How did you crash?
A few riders in front of me hit the tarmac, so the crash was unavoidable. I think that my little finger landed in the back wheel of another rider. It was cold, so luckily, I wore long gloves. They protected my fingers, otherwise it could have been much worse.
When can you start your training again?
I have to go back in a week and then they will take off the plaster. First, I have to recover from surgery and after that I can use my Tacx rollers. Hopefully I can ride my bike soon, but I don’t know when. I miss races like Dwars door Drenthe and Nokere Koerse. We will see how the wound heals and then I will discuss with the team when I can start racing again.
