Everything you need to know about the Cervélo S5, Team Visma | Lease a Bike's sprint cannon

Everything you need to know about the Cervélo S5, Team Visma | Lease a Bike's sprint cannon

The Cervélo S5 is the bike with which the sprinters of Team Visma | Lease a Bike book their victories. Wout van Aert, Christophe Laporte and Marianne Vos, among others, won stages in the world's biggest cycling race, the Tour de France, on this bike. Read all about our sprint cannon below.

Features of the S5

You can think of the S5 as the 'base bike'. It is the fastest, stiffest and most aerodynamic bike in the range of the Team Visma | Lease a Bike riders. By far the most training and competition kilometres are covered on this model. The S5 comes into its own in spring classics and flat stages, but this type of bike is also often chosen during not too tough climbs.

Jenco Drost, Head of Performance Equipment at Team Visma | Lease a Bike: "Cervélo specially developed a V-stem for the S5. This makes the front of the bike one unit. This ensures a very efficient energy transfer. Every kick the riders make goes directly to the asphalt. There is no energy lost in the bike, and that has significant benefits, especially when it comes to sprinting."

Cervélo took advantage of the UCI's new aerodynamics regulations to increase the aero profiles of the S5. The frame tubes have become larger without increasing the bike's weight. In fact, the overall weight of the current S5 is 53 grams lower than the earlier model. The bike weighs about 7.2 kilograms.

Victories on the S5

The fourth stage of the Tour de France 2022 was one to remember for Team Jumbo-Visma (now Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and Wout van Aert. On the final climb, the Belgian went on the attack and rode solo to the finish on his Cervélo S5 and in the yellow jersey.

In spring 2023, we have witnessed a new cycling fairytale. Van Aert and Laporte manage to escape the peloton in Gent-Wevelgem. Together they cross the finish line, which immediately marked Laporte's first win in a spring classic!

Jonas Vingegaard started and ended the Tour de France of 2023 on the S5.
